DESCRIPTION:Please join us June 13th for our reading at Flagship Books featuring Victoria Garton\, Serina Allison Hearn\, and Boyd Bauman. \nVictoria Garton’s 4th book\, Light Through a Cat’s Ear\, came out in 2025 from Kelsay Books and is available there and on Amazon. Its three sections\, Natura\, Important Arguments\, and Changing of the Gods\, feature themes she’s explored since first publishing in 1978: our relationships to nature\, the inner self\, and higher powers. Her poetry has appeared in many journals including I-70 Review\, Thorny Locust\, Coal City Review\, and previous Writers Place Yearbooks. She lives on a ranch in Nevada\, MO\, and is retired from teaching composition and literature for Crowder College. \n  \n  \n  \nSerina Allison Hearn is a Trinidadian-born poet\, essayist\, preservationist\, and environmental activist based between Trinidad and Lawrence\, Kansas. She is the author of Dreaming the Bronze Girl and Atlas of Our Birth\, with essays published in Wired868 and the Trinidad and Tobago Express. Her work explores place\, memory\, ecology\, exile\, and inheritance. She is the founder and curator of the Garden with Wings\, a butterfly and pollinator garden at the Royal Botanic Gardens in Port of Spain\, Trinidad. In Lawrence\, she provides Victorian homes for KU students and creates pollinator gardens that link historic preservation with ecological restoration. \n  \n  \nBoyd Bauman grew up on a small ranch south of Bern\, Kansas\, his dad the storyteller and mom the family scribe.  His books of poetry are Cleave and Scheherazade Plays the Chestnut Tree Café\, and his children’s book is The Heights of Love.  After stints in New York\, Colorado\, Alaska\, Japan\, and Vietnam\, Boyd now is a librarian and writer in Kansas City.   Visit at boydbauman.weebly.com. \n  \n  \n

Catherine works in libraries\, and you can often find her reading poetry in the Crossroads or on Strawberry Hill. Her award-winning collection\, Dress Me Like a Prizefighter\, is available from Spartan Press. \n  \n  \n \n  \nBrandon Whitehead has one poetry collection “Thieves\, Pharaohs & Mexican Daredevils”\, and one short story collection “Outpost 4423”. Follow the road past the pond on the left and into the parking lot. The main building has two wings\, like an airplane. The Jewell Student Center is the fuselage in the middle. Take the stairs down and enter the doors marked “Henry M. Louis.” Follow the hallway straight back to room 2325. This interactive Campus Map lets you select “Floor 1” and then zoom in to see room 2325 in the Jewell Student Center. \n  \nHuascar Medina is a poet\, editor\, essayist\, and letter writer. He was Kansas’s poet laureate from 2019 to 2022 and became an Academy of American Poets Laureate Fellow in 2022. His books include How to Hang the Moon (Spartan Press)\, Un Mango Grows in Kansas (Spartan Press)\, Protest as Love Poem (Meadowlark Press)\, and the upcoming Prairie Fool (Plainspoken Books)\, a collection of essays on politics\, class\, and culture. She previously taught fiction writing at the University of Kansas for eight years. She earned an M.F.A. in fiction from Bowling Green State University in 1998 and a B.A. in English and French from Fort Hays State University in 1992\, and studied French for a year at the University of Nice. In 2004\, she received the Langston Hughes Creative Writing Award in Fiction from the Lawrence Arts Center. Her first book\, Certain Dawn\, Inevitable Dawn\, a collection of short stories\, was a finalist for the Thorpe Menn Literary Award. Her second collection is The Garden of Earthly Delights (2020). Her stories have appeared in Web Conjunctions\, Coal City Review\, Flint Hills Review\, South Dakota Review\, and Stickman Review. Her travels in Europe\, Eastern Europe\, Russia\, and Central America have influenced her writing. She is also an artist\, musician\, and Corgi breeder \n  \nBryan Whitehead grew up in Kansas City\, Kansas. After working as a media law attorney in Washington\, DC\, he moved back to his hometown to teach at Kansas City Kansas Community College.  In addition to his day job\, he maintains a media criticism blog called The Hoffman Lens. It is on the west side of the street. Parking is not available in the U-Haul parking lot. \nJenea Havener is a writer\, editor\, and teacher with a B.A. in English and history from the University of Kansas and an MFA from Bennington Writing Seminars. Her work has appeared twice in Narrative Magazine as a Story of the Week and is forthcoming from Cutleaf Journal. She was named a finalist in two Narrative story contests\, won the Langston Hughes Award in Fiction in 2023\, and was shortlisted for The Masters Review’s 2023 Winter Short Story Award. This year\, her short story collection was shortlisted for the Iowa Short Fiction Award. She lives with her family in Lawrence\, Kansas\, where she teaches creative writing at the Lawrence Arts Center. \n  \n  \nPaige Webb is a queer\, neurodivergent poet-scholar. The aim of their work is to create space for curative touch with the creative vitality inherent in all beings. They are the author of the forthcoming collections Sundry Theatres (Lit Fox Books\, 2027) and Living Environments: New Mess (YesYes Books\, 2028)\, as well as the chapbook Tussle (dancing girl press). You can find their poetry in Anomaly\, Blackbird\, Colorado Review\, Denver Quarterly\, DIAGRAM\, Indiana Review\, The Kenyon Review\, Poets.org\, Poetry Northwest\, Quarterly West\, Vinyl\, VOLT\, The Volta\, West Branch\, among other venues. They are an assistant teaching professor at Rockhurst University. \n  \n  \n  \n  \nCaroline Crew is an assistant professor of creative writing at the University of Central Missouri\, where she serves as Editor in Chief of Pleiades: Literature in Context.
