The challenge (should you decide to accept it): Share your thoughts on an encounter or ghost—of any description or disposition—in a poem in an upcoming open mic at the Phil Miller Memorial Scholarship Reading.

This event includes a silent auction of original artwork by local/regional artists, and book baskets by local/regional writers.

Proceeds go to the Phil Miller Memorial Scholarship Fund, which benefits students at Kansas City Kansas Community College, where Phil taught many years.

You won’t be alone! Kansas Poet Laureate Kevin Rabas will join us!

Kansas Poet Laureate (2017-2019) Kevin Rabas chairs the Dept of English, Modern Languages, and Journalism at Emporia State and leads the poetry and playwriting tracks. He received his Ph.D. in English from the University of Kansas, M.FA. in Creative Writing from Goddard College, and M.A. in English from Kansas State.

Susan Carman is a Pushcart Prize nominee, and served as poetry co-editor for Kansas City Voices. Her poetry and essays have appeared in various publications, including I-70 Review, Coal City Review, Imagination and Place, and Kalliope, where she was a finalist for the Sue Saniel Elkind Poetry Award. Her essay, “An Extra Helping of Grace,” received a national award from Penguin Press. Retired from nonprofit management, Susan enjoys traveling in her writing and in her free time.

 

Beth Gulley is a Kansas poet who loves to travel. While she spends most of her time teaching English at Johnson County Community College, she spent the 2016-2017 school year in Xi’an, China. Then she spent her winter holiday 2018 in Pakistan. In addition to writing, she loves volunteering, running, and drinking coffee. Her recent publications include poetry in Apeiron Review, Thorny Locust, Kansas English, and 365 Poems/ 365 Days Anthology Vol. 2.

Music by Too Late for Satellites

Stanley E. Banks has been Poet, English Professor, and Artist-in- Residence at Avila University for 20 years. Banks had his 5th book of poetry, Blue Issues, published in 2013. His other four books are Blue Beat Syncopation (2003), Rhythm and Guts (1992), Coming From a Funky Time and Place (1988), and On 10th Alley Way (1981). He also was the Editor for two other books of poetry. Further, he has been the Advisor and Creative Director for Avila University’s student literary magazine titled Sound and Furyfor 20 years. He won the Langston Hughes Prize for Poetry in 1981, and in 1989 he was awarded the National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship/Grant.

 

BJ Soloy is on the English faculty at Metropolitan Community College’s Blue River campus. He has a chapbook, Selected Letters, out with New Michigan Press and poems in places like FIELD, Colorado Review, Barrow Street, LIT, Columbia Poetry Review, New American Writing, and Guernica. He lives in Kansas City with Julie “The Hammer” Rouse, Solomon Longfellow, and Julie’s unstable familiar, Alette.

Multi-instrumentalists Ian Blackie, Jeremy Gulley, Trevon Waddle, and Jake Brooks team up to form Too Late for Satellites, blending together singer-songwriting, indie, folk, classical, and atmospheric music. The key to their music is patience--exploring the potential of each moment.
